AHIMA 2007

Technology That Makes Cents

Twenty years is a long time in the IT world. And, that’s how long MedQuist, a Platinum Level sponsor, has been supporting the AHIMA Convention and Exhibition. While technology has advanced, so have documentation requirements. No wonder hundreds of HIM professionals flocked to MedQuist’s booth at the Philadelphia Convention Center – where they gained insights into the tools and techniques we use for optimizing the clinical information process. After all, MedQuist handles billions of lines transcription while saving millions in pennies each year – succeeding through a combination of innovative technologies and time-honored service.

MedQuist demonstrated a broad range of solutions: workflow, speech recognition, coding and transcription.

Speech recognition and workflow solutions were hot topics at AHIMA 2007. “It’s All About the Process,” presented by Dori Dunn, MedQuist's Director of DEP Product Management, was one of the most attended of the Product World presentations – even though it was given before the show officially opened.

In addition, visitors sought out MedQuist customer and HIM Director Debra Robinson for her insights into implementing MedQuist’s voice capture, on-premise dictation and workflow management solutions at five-star rated Self Regional Healthcare.

Our surveyor mined opinions as if they were gold, and the results yielded some fascinating insights. Technology was the most significant factor (80 percent agree) when choosing vendors. Respondents were wary of using offshore labor for transcription. About two-thirds reported the phone as the primary dictation device; however, mobile dictation was predicted to take its place within two to three years.
